This level is made of brass with a black painted finish. It consists of a telescope tube resting on two supports and a spirit level with graduation marks on the glass attached to a foot plate. There is a knurled knob on the side of the instrument between the level and the telescope. The instrument is stopped in a custom wood case with usage instructions pasted on the inside top lid and in the inside sides of the case. Serial number 12391. Box is stenciled with “L14"
This instrument was mounted on a tripod and leveled by adjusting the leveling screws on the footplate until the spirit level indicated the instrument was level. A user then would use the telescope to look at a stadia rod, and adjust the instrument until the rod was set in the telescope’s crosshairs. The difference in hight between the telescope and the stadia rod indicated the change in elevation between the two.
