Almost all the faculty and students affiliated with MIT's chemical engineering program were involved with some aspect of the Army Chemical Warfare Service during World War I. In particular, the department made significant contributions to gas warfare technology. The particular mask, the Corrected English Mask, was the first successful gas mask developed in the United States following the country's entry into the war in 1917.
