Description

Klein MD-351 Search Magnetometer. One of a kind hand wired prototype.

The Klein Associates, Inc. Model MD-351 Search Magnetometer is an instrument for detecting and mapping magnetic anomalies in the ocean. This unit is the shipboard part of the system. This unit would be connected to two cables which would lead out to two sensors towed behind a moving boat. This particular magnetometer is a "proton procession" unit. The in-water sensors consist of toroid-shaped coils filled with a hydrocarbon fluid. This particular system is also a "differential" magnetometer rather than a "total field" magnetometer. This differential technique allows the system to tune out areas with high ambient magnetic fields. The system is used to detect ferrous metals such as shipwrecks, pipelines, and mines.
