Exhibit Maintenance Technician (Temporary)
The MIT Museum is seeking an Exhibit Maintenance Technician to provide operational support and maintenance for new and existing exhibitions. This position will proactively support the exhibits manager with exhibit installations, including light construction and carpentry, exhibit and artifact installations, and media installations; and support the back-of-house exhibits operations, including helping to maintain supplies and inventory. This role will require working in multiple locations. This is a full-time, one-year (renewable) in-person role.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
- Supporting exhibition installations, including light construction, carpentry, AV installations, lighting focus, cleaning, and object installations.
- Working with contracted temporary installers, art handlers, and vendors for a collaborative workflow.
- Maintaining current exhibitions on display and ensuring they are in good working order.
- Coordinating maintenance coverage staffing with the manager during open Museum hours.
- Maintaining exhibit back-of-house areas, organizing inventories of exhibit maintenance tools and equipment for a clean and healthy environment.
- Maintaining department supplies.
- Documenting work as needed, including working with department processes and workflow documents.
- Transporting supplies and tools between multiple sites.
- Supporting the receipt and staging of crates for new installations.
- Supporting the de-installation, crating, and shipping of exhibitions.
- Preparing art objects for installation.
- Remaining informed of trends in museum installation best practices.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- At least two years of experience in a museum or art/craftsmanship studio.
- Experience with shop tools and finish painting.
- Attention to detail; excellent oral and technical communication skills; flexibility; self-motivation; goal orientation; collaborative approach.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Experience with Microsoft Office 360.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- B.A./B.S. degree in studio art or related field.
- Experience with media and AV integration.
- CAD or SketchUp drafting skills.
This position is an MIT pay scale 4.
