General Dynamics Fore River Shipyard Collection

Archives, photos, and film documenting the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts in the late 20th century.

In 1964, General Dynamics purchased the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts from Bethlehem Steel. Continuing operations as a major commercial and naval yard, General Dynamics built naval support ships, nuclear submarines, liquefied natural gas tankers, and other large modern vessels. General Dynamics closed the shipyard in 1986.

Following the closure of the yard, General Dynamics donated this substantial collection of photographs, film, and archival material to MIT. These document ship construction and design at the Fore River yard for the duration of General Dynamics ownership, including some designs never built.
