Description

This object is a hand colored lithograph showing a side view of a dead whale with a circular platform erected atop it. There is a man tipping his hat and waving a Dutch flag on top of the platform. A line of people appears to emerge from the whale’s mouth and curves around the front of the whale and ends near the tip of its tail. At the center of the image, near the end of the line, there is a procession of men wearing top hats and waving a Dutch flag, four men in traditional Chinese dress, two men hold the reins of a giraffe, and a group of men ride an elephant near the whale’s flank.
