Description

Hand-colored lithograph depicting a large sperm whale, its head jutting from the water as it spouts and upturns a whaleboat, sending men into the waves. At left, men in another whaleboat pull a wet-haired man from the water. There is a harpoon in the whale's side, explaining its panicked behavior. Another whaleboat approaches from the left-hand background; behind it is a whaleship flying the American flag.

Title printed in a box at bottom centre of image. Artist and publisher information, the address "152 Nassau St. NY", and "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1852 by N. Currier, in the Clerk's Office of the District-Court of the Southern District of N.Y." printed in lower margin.
