Description

Colored engraving of a large black whale overturning a rowboat at sea. The rowboat is depicted in midair; one man is still inside, seated upside down, while two others flounder in the sea beside the whale's tail. Three more rowboats surround the whale: two of them have harpoons in the back of the whale, and two lances are stuck into the whale. A large three-masted ship flying a blue flag with the British flag in the top quadrant closest to the flagpole is depicted in the background. Below the image is the text: "From an Original Design by James Waddel Esqr. Hermitage Hill.", "Engraved by W.&D. Lizars Edinburgh.", and below, in larger typeface, " DANGERS OF THE WHALE FISHERY." Below the last is the text, "Edinburgh. Published by Constable & Co. 1820."
