Bausch & Lomb was established in Rochester, NY in 1853 by the optician John Bausch and cabinet maker Henry Lomb. The company began with manufacturing monocles, then other vision products. In 1876, the company hired Ernst Gundlach, who set up the company’s microscope department. After a partnership with the German firm Zeiss, Bausch & Lomb began manufacturing other precision instruments that required optical lenses.
