Western Electric was founded in 1872 by George Shawk, Elisha Gray, and Enos Barton as a manufacturer of electronic products. The firm was acquired by the Bell Telephone Company in 1879, when it became the manufacturing (and later research and development) arm of that company. Western Electric’s engineering department became Bell Laboratories in 1925.
