Description

Marx was born in Natchez, Mississippi. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1903 and from MIT in 1907. He spent the following 18 months traveling and studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Upon his return to the United States, he worked for Killham & Hopkins in Boston, MA for six months. He then moved to Chicago and worked for Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge for six months. In 1909 he won the national competition for the Delgado Museum of Art in New Orleans, which began his private practice of Lebenbaum & Marx. Beginning with residences, his practice soon expanded to include practically every type of building, and even to landscaping, furnishings and decorating. In the field of industrial design his work has included streamline trains, subway cars and street cars. Marx was also a talented painter and many of his works have been exhibited in leading galleries. Marx was a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and he and his wife Florence were avid art collectors whose collection included works by Picasso, Braque, and Matisse. Marx was a fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
