Exhibit Maintenance Technician
The Exhibit Maintenance Technician supports the goals and operations of the Museum and collaborates effectively with the Director of Galleries and Exhibitions and the Manager of Exhibits on the operational support and maintenance of new and existing exhibitions for the Museum. This position will proactively support the Exhibits Manager with exhibit installations as needed, including light construction and carpentry, exhibit and artifact installations as required. The Exhibit Maintenance Technician supports the back of house exhibits operations, helping to maintain the exhibit department's supply and inventory.
The Museum maintains multiple work sites for back of house exhibits functions, the role will require a flexibility for working in multiple locations.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
- Actively support exhibition installations, including light construction, carpentry, lighting focus, cleaning and object installations as directed.
- Work with contracted temp. installers, art handlers and vendors for a collaborative workflow.
- Participate in the department for an understanding of the development of new exhibitions.
- Maintain current exhibitions on display in good working order.
- Be flexible in coordinating the staffing for maintenance coverage with the Manager during open Museum hours.
- Maintain exhibit back of house areas, organizing inventories of exhibit maintenance tools and equipment for a clean and healthy environment.
- Maintain department supplies as needed.
- Document work as needed including working with department processes and workflow docs.
- Transport supplies and tools between multiple sites in support of museum operations.
- Support the receiving and staging of crates for new installations.
- Support the de-installation, crating and shipping of exhibitions.
- Prepare art objects for installation.
Other Tasks
- Remain informed of trends in museum installation best practices.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Supervision Received:
Report to and work proactively and collaboratively with the Director of Galleries and Exhibitions.
Supervision Exercised:
No direct reports. May monitor and coordinate the work of subcontractors, vendors, interns or students.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Construction and fabrication knowledge and ability
- Art handling and installation
- AV tech and basic knowledge of media systems
Education:
- BA/BS degree in Studio Art or related field.
Experience & Qualifications:
- Excellent oral and technical communication skills, flexibility, self-motivation, goal-orientation and a collaborative approach are required.
- A valid driver's license.
- 2 years of experience in a museum and/or shop environment.
- Experience with shop tools and finish painting, with attention to detail.
- Experience with Microsoft Office 360.
- A preference for skills in CAD or Sketch-up drafting.
