Soft CityOn view through Summer 2025

Within the layers of colorful cotton and wool is the story of the past, present, and future of Black residents, and the neighborhoods they live in.

Data woven into these tactile tapestries bring to light historic discriminatory practices as well as current issues of social and environmental justice. The insights hidden – and revealed – in this work can inform the planning of ecologically resilient communities, and in turn potentially alter societal relationships of power. Within the tapestries you will find historic redlined mapping of Black Boston area neighborhoods including Dorchester, Roxbury, and East Cambridge.

Soft City is an exhibition by the design collaborative just practice.

About just practice:

Just practice is a collaborative practice started by Amanda Ugorji and Sophie Weston Chien. Their vision includes brainstorming and designing social-spatial liberation, altering relationships of power in society through the built environment.
