The design of private residential communities proved to be an important direction for TAC as architects and designers began to rethink the modern home during the postwar era as malleable, inexpensive, and expressive of progressive ideals. Shortly after TAC’s founding, the firm’s partner’s developed two residential communities: Six Moon Hill and Five Fields in Lexington, Massachusetts.
Five Fields is a larger development than Six Moon Hiill, consisting of eighty acres and sixty-five homes. Like Six Moon Hill, the Five Fields development includes a common recreational area. TAC established a corporation, Site and Shelter, to construct roads and sell lots. The corporation designed twenty of the homes, which were based upon standard models. Most of the homes feature asymmetrical gable roofs, split-level open plans, and a variety of amenities. The Pinkerton House and Dr. Leary House are examples of Five Fields residences represented in the MIT Museum’s collection.
