Demonstration Information Center, City Signs and Lights

Contact us about this architectural site

Description

"City Signs and Lights project, sponsored by the Boston Redevelopment Authority and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This project sought to show the possibilities in the use of signs and lights to improve the flow of information in the city. Besides graphic displays of maps with directories to local retail, cultural activities and visitor services, the demonstration center contained changing movies and slide-tape displays of Boston life and history. There was also a teletype machine giving instant news, a weather station and a question and answer machine with information about the city. The center operated on a 24-hour basis for the one-month demonstration period. As a by-product, it created a new focus for street life and conversation among strangers. The final report was published in 1973 by MIT Press as 'City Signs and Lights.'"
