Lower Manhattan Streets

Contact us about this architectural site

Description

"As a consultant to the Office of Lower Manhattan Development, Stephen Carr, working with Ashley/Meyer/Smith, developed concepts and designs for streetscape improvements, and a public information system to be built as part of a planned extension of the Second Avenue subway. The design linked the lobbies of existing and proposed office buildings to the subway on two levels. A retail arcade with skylights would be located on the lower level. A pedestrian information center would be part of the subway entrance, with an underpass linking it to an outdoor theater and fountain court between Front and South streets. A terraced outdoor cafe could afford a view of Wall Street. The Second Avenue subway, which would have paid for these improvements, is still not completed."
