North Point Park
2023.029.1015
“North Point Park is the largest and most accessible park in the New Charles River Basin. It benefits from and serves the immediately adjacent residential and office development, as well as the entire city of Cambridge and the metropolitan area. The design features islands and canals, referencing the islands and inland waterways of the old Basin. The mainland and two islands each have their own lawn meadow and shaded paths flanked by rich native plantings. The park also includes an intensively used large playground, designed for children of all ages with a spray fountain water feature and the interactive drum table and stools; and a floating dock. A later addition, under the adjacent highway ramps, is the well-used Lynch Family Skate Park and the feasibility of adding a river swimming pool to this popular park is now (2023) being assessed. ‘A Point Well Made’ was the title in the June 1997 Landscape Architecture article.”
A Haven for Families: “North Point Park in the New Charles River Basin is a key destination for families with children. The canal provides safe access to the waters' edge and is an ideal venue for small boats. The proposed playground, shown below, recalled the estuary that once was here and the creatures that inhabited it would be an interpretative experience. The final playground incorporates that idea into its fencing.”
