Roslindale High School Adaptive Reuse Housing

Contact us about this architectural site

Description

"A decommissioned high school, built in 1928, was converted into 102 dwelling units for elderly and disabled tenants. It also houses congregate and outreach services for the elderly, and, in the auditorium wing, a community center for the neighborhood at large. The building's common facilities include dining rooms, kitchens, laundry and health rooms. Special attention was given to facilitating active social interchange among the residents as well as providing spaces for passive recreation. The usual monotony of repeated corridors and units was countered by variations in height and illuminations, made possible by extraordinarily high ceilings." From "Imre Halasz, Anthony Halasz", by Gaspar and Timon, 2002.
