Description

"This project began as the winning entry to a competition that sought designs for expanding the offices of an interdisciplinary "think tank" research firm as well as long-range strategies for developing the surrounding area, a light-industrial zone on the outskirts of Cambridge. The 60,000 sq. ft. building was completed in two stages. It contains researcher's offices, as well as a large meeting space, cafeteria, day care center and library. The building is particularly designed to encourage casual interactions, and the interior scheme is laced with alcoves and stopping places, and also presents a terraced meeting space open to the second and third floors, and outdoor spaces including a large interior courtyard. Initially the building was a two story concrete and masonite structure on a floating foundation. Later a steel framed third and fourth floor were added. The cantilevered structure is clad in wood and glass, with vertical sun screens facing west and horizontal brise-soleil above south-facing windows."
