Description

Downtown Urban Design Plan: "As consultants to the City, Carr, Lynch Associates updated and expanded the urban design plan for downtown Roanoke, Virginia. Key issues in this five-year plan were the location and design of a new convention center, and the completion of the market district with compatible hotel and office development. The proposed convention center and office buildings were developed. The plan focused on the consolidation and linkage of the downtown's three retail districts, and the establishment of Roanoke as a convention location. The plaza, with its new public and private activity, would be a centerpiece in Roanoke's continuing downtown renewal."

Gateway Plaza: "A major element in the Downtown Roanoke urban design plan prepared by Carr, Lynch Associates was the development of Gateway Plaza, a new public and private development anchoring one end of the Market District. CLA proposed a tiered plaza with fountains and reflecting pool flanked by two new office buildings with ground floor restaurants. Across the street, a luxury hotel would be combined with 20 units of terraced condominiums."

Convention Center: "As part of its Design '85 plan for downtown Roanoke, Carr, Lynch Associates proposed that a new convention center be built to help attract more businesses to the City. Rather than locating this 75,000 square convention and conference center outside of town, the plan recommended that it be built in close proximity to the Market District, on a site adjacent to the majestic Hotel Roanoke. The concepts, endorsed by both Downtown Roanoke and the City, have been partially implemented, largely by downtown businesses."
