Lowell Heritage State Park

Description

"Carr, Lynch Associates designed the entry plazas to the Lowell Heritage State Park. The park celebrates the city's industrial history and displays a number of large artifacts from 19th-century Lowell, including canal locks, a barrel vault over the canal that was under the former train station, and an 18-foot belt pulley from the mills. The spaces are designed to serve visitors to the park, downtown workers, and surrounding residents. The fenced garden in the Eastern Plaza was designed to recall the forecourt to the train station that was located here in the 19th century. Its Victorian elegance contrasts with the adjacent archaeologically significant eccentric barrel vault which spanned the Merrimack Canal under the Station. The design features the eccentric barrel vault and recreates the entrance wall to the old train station to give it context. A typical train car of the time was located adjacent to the vault. The huge belt pulley located nearby marks the entrance to the water power exhibit."
