Rosenthal Porcellan Fabrik / Porcelain Factory

Contact us about this architectural site

Description

In 1963, TAC was commissioned by Philip Rosenthal to design a new factory complex for china (ceramic) production. A large factory space, storage and waste silos, parking area, entrance canopy, garage, office building, and employee social hall were all constructed using precast concrete. The factory consisted of a flexible open plan, which allowed for continuous skylights, overhead mechanical production and runways, and the possibility for easy building expansion. A greenhouse located at the intersection of the entrance aisle and the main aisle of the factory contributed to a humanizing atmosphere, an aspect that Gropius was particularly attuned to when conceiving of workspaces.
