Stuyvesant Cove Park

Contact us about this architectural site

Description

“As a second step in realizing the East River dream, Carr, Lynch and Sandell, as consultants to the landscape architects, Johansson & Walcavage, collaborated on the design of Stuyvesant Cove Park, reaching from 18th to 23rd streets. The adjacent dense residential developments, Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, guaranteed that the park would be well used. In addition to continuing the bikeway and esplanade, the park provides tables, chairs and benches, shade structures and dense planting, some in coves on the river side of the railing, all to be enjoyed at the river's edge. The resulting design character reflects this unique East River spot.

“As team members, Carr, Lynch and Sandell, besides collaborating on the overall plan, were responsible for the design of the series of pavilions with boulder walls along the bicycle trail and the connecting structure which helped frame the park. As the Johansson & Walcavage planting developed, these pavilions provided sheltered spots for cyclists and the community. CLS was also responsible for the design of benches, lighting, railing and other ‘hardscape’.”
