This item is a neutron flux detector for use in a fission chamber. Because a reactor’s power is linearly proportional to neutron flux, detectors like these provide a measurement of power output. This neutron flux detector was used in the first nuclear reactor at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, and it was designed and produced under the supervision of Truman S. Gray in the Servomechanisms Laboratory of the Department of Electrical Engineering. Gordon S. Brown was director of the laboratory and William M. Pease oversaw the project to develop instrumentation and controls for the Brookhaven reactor.
