Needlework image of the MIT dome with trees and grass in foreground. The item has an off-white mat and a frame made of brown wood with diagonal grain that is black at inner and outer borders. There is a needlepoint inscription within a rectangular box above the dome: 'Dr. H. L. Hazen / In memory of your visit / to Japan / I. Koga'
In 1951, as Japan was rebuilding its economy after World War II, the Japanese government invited members of the American Society for Engineering Education to evaluate and make recommendations for engineering education at Japanese universities. That delegation, led by Harold Hazen, the head of MIT’s electrical engineering department, eventually led to the development of the Japanese Society for Engineering Education. This needlepoint commemorates that visit.
