In 1992, then president George H. W. Bush instituted the National Technology Initiative (NTI), a presidential initiative to promote technological strategies to strengthen the American economy and better compete in global markets. The kickoff event for the NTI was a February conference at MIT that brought together universities, government agencies, and major corporations. The day before the event, MIT hackers welcomed the delegation with this banner outside of Lobby 7.
