PHANToM model

Description

During a conversation with Thomas Massie, MIT researcher Kenneth Salisbury asked, “What if I could take my fingers off this keyboard and reach into the computer to touch what I see on the screen?” This inspired Massie's senior project: a computer interface that allowed people to experience the digital world using their sense of touch. By exerting forces against the fingertip using computer-controlled motors in its arm, PHANToM creates the illusion of touching and manipulating real objects.

This wooden model was built by Thomas Massie to illustrate his concept for the PHANToM Haptic Interface
