This compound monocular microscope has a main body tube with an eyepiece on top, a focusing knob at the front of the body tube. The microscope has three objectives on it, and a circular and rotatable stage, but is missing its stage clips. The instrument rests on a horseshoe base and has a curved handle arm. Base is stamped "C. Reichert // Wien // No. 57382.” The microscope is housed in its original wooden case, and the case has a box with additional lenses, and another box with one slide (mounted with diatoms).
This type of instrument is a petrographic microscope used to examine rocks and minerals. The rotatable stage allows the user to view samples at every angle, and the curved arm blows for easier manipulation of samples. It was used in the MIT department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences.
