[Formal garden]

Description
Drawing on brown paper of a formal, symmetrical garden. On the left is a lower garden level with an obelisk in the middle and a row of figural sculptures along a wall backed by a row of hedges. On the right is a terrace on the side of a buildings with stairs leading down to the garden. In the distance is a colonnaded building or loggia. Some areas are variously colored green, blue, and red-brown. The subject of the drawing is surrounded by an unfinished Greek border motif and includes two additional small sketches (plan and elevation) in the right margin. In the center of the lower edge of the border is scrawled “FRONTISPICIUM”, the Latin word for frontispiece, suggesting that this drawing may have been an exercise or assignment in design for a book, portfolio, or other publication. On the back of the sheet is a faint, partial, unfinished, and reversed version of the more finished drawing on the front.
