Description

Hand-colored cartoon depicting a whale skeleton fitted out with steps and carriage wheels, with a host of frogs and fishes in fancy dress around and upon it. A sign atop the whale reads "De La Place Louis XV Aux Chaps Elysees". The picture is titled "Les Métamorphoses du Jour." at top, and numbered No. 71. Below, it is labeled "Omnibus Royal des Pays-Bas." This translates to "The Transformations of the Day. Royal Conveyance of the Netherlands."

This plate was part of an 1830 addition to J.J. Grandville's 1829 "Les Métamorphoses du Jour," which extended Grandville's satirical observations of Paris to the Netherlands. The book was republished in 1854.
