Description

Seven small prints of Jonah and the whale are mounted on backing. First row, left to right: (1) simple woodcut; Jonah regurgitated by the whale, which is spouting and has spines, onto shore; ship in the background. (2) Jonah, naked and bearded, spat up by a black whale onto a rocky shore at sunset or sunrise. Underneath is the caption, "Jonah and the Whale."

Second row, left to right: (3) On a stormy sea, figures in a boat with sails prepare to push Jonah overboard. The whale, portrayed as a giant fish, waits with mouth agape. Print is octagonal in shape. In lower right corner is written the name "Anderson". (4) The whale, which is spouting, spits Jonah onto a shore. The sky is dark and there are hills in the background. Jonah is portrayed as clothed, bearded, and wearing a turban. In the lower left corner are the letters "A.A.". Print is octagonal in shape.

Third row, left to right: (5) The whale, portrayed as a giant spouting fish, spits Jonah onto a shore. Jonah has long hair and a beard. A ship with sails and rocks are visible in the background. (6) The whale spits Jonah, naked, onto a rocky shore. Very similar in composition to (2) in terms of the shape of the whale, the clouds, the waves, the rocks, and the poses of Jonah and the whale, but thicker lines and overall less fine detail. Possibly a copy. Underneath the image is printed the text, "Jonah and the Whale." (7) On a stormy sea, three figures in a ship with sails push Jonah overboard. Jonah is depicted halfway through his fall into the water. Three ships are visible in the background, and the sky is dark and cloudy. In the bottom left is the name "Anderson".
