Description

This map shows the Indian Ocean from an area from Egypt to East Asia. On each side of the title cartouche are nset maps, one shows the North Pole and "Annonis Periplus." The cartographic sources of this map are based on Homer's Odyssee, Isaac Tzetzes, Ovidius and Ausonius. Copper-engraving, decorative handcolored in outline and wash. Published in a Dutch text edition of J. Jansson's historical Atlas. Engraved and published by J. Janssonius after the cartographical sources by Abraham Ortelius. The title cartouche in the upper centre, ornated with two circular insets: 'Annonis Periplus' and the North Polar region. In the lower bottom is an extensive text cartouche. This map was published in Jan Jansson's Novus Atlas, Sive Theatrum Orbis Terrarum: In quo Orbis Antiquus, Seu Geographia Vetus, Sacra & Profana exhibetur, Volume 6 published in 1658.
