Uncolored engraving divided into quarters, with each showing a scene of the Dutch wintering on Nova Zemblya in 1596-97, when the ships of William Barentsz and his crew became stuck in the ice. A title-page engraving for an edition of Gerrit de Veer's account of this journey to Nova Zembla, first published in 1598. Scenes depict, from top left clockwise, a bear mauling a man's head while another man shoots the bear, with ships and another man being eaten by a bear in the background; a sjip stranded on ice; men rolling barrels and carrying bags out of small boats onto the ice; men butchering a bear on the ice while behind them, at the door of a small cabin with a lookout tower whose loft is a barrel, another man shoots at a large bear.
