Description

An engraving of the Battle of Solebay, a naval engagement that began the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672-1674). Admiral Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich, urged the Duke of York without prevail to take the fleet to sea in order to avoid the risk of being ambushed by the Dutch while anchoring on the lee shore in

Solebay of Southwold Bay, Suffolk. When the Dutch fleet appeared and attacked Sandwich's unsupported squadron, they set Sandwich's flagship. The British and Dutch flag are prominently in the center. The scene engraved after a painting by Robert Cleveley (1747-1809) is framed, and a plaque with an allegorical figure carving an inscription rests on top.
