Contact us about this object

Description

A print made after the oil painting, The Golden Leeuw in Amsterdam by Willem van de Velde II. The Golden Leeuw (or the Golden Lion) is the large ship of the line in the center left with her stern faced toward the viewer. The Golden Lion was a Dutch, 80-cannon ship that served Admiral Cornelis Tromp during the Second English-Dutch War. Built in 1666, the ship was a symbol of Dutch naval strength. She played a role in several major Dutch-victorious sea battles such as the Second Sea Battle of Schooneveld and the Battle of Texel.
