Description

A depiction of the naval engagement of 29 November 1811, fought between the British Royal Navy and French Navy frigate squadrons during the Adriatic campaign of the Napoleonic Wars. The British and French vied for dominance over the region. HMS 'Active,' 'Alceste,' and 'Unité' captured the French frigate 'La Pomone' and storeship 'Persanne.' The 'Alceste' is shown on the left from a three-quarters stern view. The French 'La Pomone' is in the right middle ground. The frigate is badly damaged and her masts have all fallen. In the background, behind 'La Pomone,' is the ship 'Active.' Her sails and head are hazily visible amidst the smoke. The names of the ships are written in graphite underneath the image.
