Description

Seascape with four large ships and several single-masted boats. The closest boat, at the center of the composition, flies a British naval jack. In the background, at left, is a long landmass; at the far right is a solitary rock, the Mewstone.

The Mewstone or Great Mewstone is an island approximately 8km from Plymouth in the United Kingdom; its name comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for herring gull, "mew" or "maew".
