Description

Tinted lithograph depicting the ironclad "Roanoke" at anchor in New York, side view; two smokestacks and three turrets are visible atop her. At right, on land, is a large warehouse or factory building with a sign reading "Novelty Works"; there is an "x" printed above the building, corresponding to a note in the lower margin which reads: "x The Novelty Works". At far left is a derrick tower with a hook and pulley system hanging off its side, and an American flag atop it; this is labeled with an "o", corresponding to a note in the lower margin reading "o Derrick." The date, artist, and publisher information are also printed in the lower margin, along with "U.S. Iron Clad Steam-Ship "Roanoke" The first Turretted Frigate in the U.S. 1863."
