Description

Uncolored line engraving depicting a stern view of the East Indiaman "Kent" as her deck is engulfed in flames; she flies the British naval jack upside down, a distress signal. Another ship, the brigantine Cambria, is visible riding down the crest of a large wave and several of her boats approach the "Kent", the choppy seas towering around the small vessels. The events pictured occured on 1 March 1825, in the Bay of Biscay. Title and production information printed in lower margin; marked "Proof" in lower right corner of margin; Clark pencil note in left-hand side of lower margin.
