Description

A port-side view of the clipper ship 'Nightingale' leaving the Battery in New York. At the time of her construction, she was considered the fastest ship in the world. For example, she took a passage from Shanghai to London in 24 hours and a passage from Batavia Roads to London in 70 days. On May 19, 1854, she sailed from New York to Melbourne in the fastest passage ever yet made, which was 76 days and 16 hours. Here, she flies the American flag and passes by a small rowboat with six men. The Castle Clinton is visible in the left background.
