Description

An engraving from a series of prints by R. Short that depict French and Spanish Men of War taken on the 3rd of May, 1747 (Julian calendar) at the First Battle of Cape Finisterre, and 14th of October, 1747 (Julian Calendar) at the Second Battle of Cape Finisterre. The vessels portrayed in this print are the stern views of two of the six French ships captured May 3rd: the 'Glorie' and the 'Serieux' (renamed 'Intrepid'). The two former French ships on the right fire a canon, perhaps as a ship's salute, as they do not appear to be in the context of battle.
