Description

Tinted lithograph depicting the beginning of the Great Ocean Yacht Race, the first Trans-Atlantic yacht race by privately owned yachts, on December 11, 1866. Under the New York Yacht Club, three schooners raced from Sandy Hook, NJ to Cowes, Isle of Wight. The New York Yacht Club steamer 'River Queen' four miles east of Sandy Hook Light ship signified the starting point of the race. The 'Henrietta,' owned and boarded by the 21-year-old American newspaper publisher James Gordon Bennett, won, arriving at 5:45 pm on Christmas day for a time of 13 days and 22 hours. The 'Fleetwing' arrived 8 hours later, followed by the 'Vesta,' 1 ½ hours later.
