Fairland, Thomas
Lithographer and printer
A tinted lithograph of the SS 'Royal William' navigating through rough waves nine days after departing from Liverpool to New York on her maiden voyage. She arrived at New York after 19 days with 32 passengers. She is frequently cited as the first passenger steamer to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Liverpool under continuous steam and the first ship divided into watertight compartments. In the print, a wave crashes over the paddlewheel. The square sails of another vessel are visible in the distance.
