Captain Nye of the US Mail steamship 'Pacific' rescued 16 crewmembers of the sinking barque 'Jesse Stevens' by means of a Francis Metallic Life Boat during a heavy gale on December 4, 1852. A boat full of the rescued can be seen near the stern of the sinking barque behind the large starboard-side view of the SS 'Pacific.'
