Description

A view of a large ocean liner heading toward the viewer surrounded by smaller, mostly American steamboats. The sailors of the two large frigates in the right background man the rails and perform a salute. The frigate on the most right side of the print hangs a banner that says, "Welcome Prince Henry." In 1902, Prince Henry of Prussia (1862-1929), brother of Kaiser Wilhelm II, made a state visit to New York where President Theodore Roosevelt received him. He arrived on the new SS 'Kronprinz Wilhelm' rather than an imperial yacht accompanied by a large number of reporters, 300 passengers, and 700 steerage passengers aboard. The ship was advertised as part of the "Royal Family" of the North German Lloyd Steamship Line, and it was furnished with lavish accommodations that made it popular with wealthy passengers.
