Description

On February 26, 1874, the Union Navy performed torpedo exercises in the Bay of Key West Florida at targets made of 78 barrels attached to a wooden framework and arranged in three tiers. The USS 'Wabash' led the exercise along with 'Ossipee,' 'Colorado,' 'Brooklyn,' and others. The ships are labeled in the margin below the image. A large explosion occurs in the center of the print, and a tower of water and debris is projected into the air.
