Gyroscope and accelerometer mount. The IMU gyroscopes and accelerometers had to be aligned absolutely perfectly and held in a stable unit. In the working IMUs this was a carefully fabricated 6-inch sintered block of beryllium. To save time, the IMU components (gyroscopes and accelerometers) were prealigned and tested before being assembled into the stable member. This wooden model was one of many fabricated by expert model makers at the Instrumentation Laboratory who helped the engineers perfect the design and fabrication specifications for A.C. Electronics division of General Motors to manufacture.
