Original Caption: "Ralph Alter (left) and Ronald Rothchild, graduate students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, test a prosthetic device operated via a computer (not shown) by bioelectric signals generated when Alter contracts the muscles in his upper arm. The research was carried out in the Research Laboratory of Electronics and the Engineering Projects Laboratory, both at M.I.T., under sponsorship of the Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. of Boston."
