Original Caption: Nine Massachusetts Institute of Technology scientists are among the scientists representing several leading universities doing highly technical and important study of cosmic rays in the Colorado Rockies this summer. Shown here by one of the huge trailer-laboratories used by MIT are the crew, some of whom take the opportunity of the rustic mountain life to cultivate lush beards and sport alpine hats. Kneeling are, from left to right, William Edgerton, Hans Courant, Robert Hewitt and A. J. McMahon. Standing are Martin Annis, Herbert Bridge, Ismael Escobar, Jerone Tiemann and Daniel Anderson. Escobar, top scientist at the University of LaPaz, Bolivia, spent the year at MIT and is developing a project to take back to the 21,000-foot peaks of his native land. Among the schools using the facilities of the Inter-University High Altitude Laboratories at Echo Lake, 10,600 feet above sea level, and Mount Evans, 14,260 feet, are members of the organization: Denver, Cornell, Chicago, Syracuse, Colorado and Princeton universities and MIT. Guest schools this year include Rice and Michigan U.
