Original Caption: "ENGINEERS AWARDED HIGH HONORS AT DINNER Three of the highest honors of American engineering societies were awarded Jan. 27 at a dinner of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers to (left to right) Gerard Swope, president of the General Electric Co., New York City, Dr. Willis R. Whitney, honorary vice president of General Electric Co., Schnectady, N.Y.; and Dr. Edwin H. Armstrong, Professor of Electrical Engineering, Columbia University, and developer of frequency modulation radio. They hold the medals they received, respectively, the Hoover Medal for advancing 'the well-being of mankind'; the John Fritz Medal 'for distinguished research;' and the Edison Medal to Armstrong for 'meritorious achievement in electrical science, electrical engineering or the electrical arts.'"
